What is Functional Movement System?
Functional Movement Systems, or FMS, sounds fancy, but here's what you need to know: it's a tool that allows me to watch my clients do a few quick exercises that identify muscular imbalances as well as mobility, stability, and flexibility issues.
Why Is FMS important?
We all have faulty movement patterns that we need to correct, but without a highly trained eye, we may never realize it. FMS assessments help me identify faulty movement patterns, design corrective strategies that will fix each problem at its root source, and use a series of fitness regressions and progressions to help my clients safely and gradually get back to the fundamentals.
What are the telltale signs that I need an FMS-based plan?
Even when I meet clients who are working with a personal trainer, sometimes they feel general discomfort that seems unrelated to the exercises in the workouts themselves. It's a telltale sign that your workouts simply aren't working. A customized, FMS-based fitness routine can resolve your problems at the root to eliminate the pain so you can begin building a strong foundation.
What results can I expect with FMS?
You'll alleviate pain. You'll reduce the likelihood of injury. You'll minimize costly trips to doctors, therapists, and even prevent expensive, invasive surgeries. Most importantly, you'll feel better so you can reach your goals and maintain them for the long term.
Can you give me a real-life example?
Yes! A friend was working with a trainer who put hurdle steps in her workouts. Problem was, when I did an FMS analysis and then looked at her workouts to see if her skills were aligned with her workouts, I noticed that she didn't have the strength and balance she needed to do an adequate hurdle step. The takeaway? I told her she shouldn't be doing hurdle steps, or even running in place during a workout, even if it feels easy. The result? We worked together to develop a fitness plan that took into account her starting point, and she felt stronger, more capable, and more confident right away. That's the FMS difference, and that's what I deliver.
